Lord Farquaad, the villainous hero of Shrek

One of the animated films that proved to be a real success, worldwide, was Shrek. Is there anyone who didn’t love the cute green monkey, who didn’t adore Donkey and Puss? Even now, after more than 20 years since the release of the first film in the series, they are still watched with great pleasure. But not only the main characters were the ones that attracted our attention, but also the negative ones, and among them there was no way to not notice Lord Farquaad, and the American actor John Lithgow was the one who “lent” his voice.

Physical appearance

Lord Farquaad is very easy to recognize because he has a special appearance. He dresses especially in combinations of red and black, is small in stature, has a prominent chin and a special haircut.

Always in search of perfection

Although we cannot say about him that he is perfect, and he is aware of it, Lord Farquaad is always in search of perfection. Maybe that’s why he decides to eliminate all fairy-tale creatures from his kingdom, while also offering rewards for catching them. He wants very much to become king, but because he has no blue blood, it seems impossible. Obviously, as Lord Farquaad is also very intelligent, he realizes that he has a chance and that would be to get married. And who should be chosen if not Fiona?

It’s time for Shrek to appear

Whether he can’t or maybe he’s too comfortable to involve himself in saving Fiona, Lord Farquaad decides that he will organize a tournament after which a knight will have to save Fiona. It is the moment when everyone gets to know Shrek better who, together with Donkey, manages to defeat all the knights. Moreover, Lord Farquaad promises Shrek that he will free all the fairy creatures if he saves Fiona. Motivated, Shrek goes to work, succeeds, and brings the princess to Lord Farquaad. However, at sunset, she turns from a man into a trap, which causes her to be rejected by our negative hero. She is isolated in the castle tower, Lord Farquaad proclaims himself king and, on this occasion, sentences Shrek to death. Fortunately, everything ends well because the dragon that was guarding Fiona falls in love with Donkey so he eats Lord Farquaad who was talking to himself.

Hero in many comics

Although he is a negative hero, Lord Farquaad proved to be a very beloved character, since he appeared in other films of the series, as well as numerous comics, and even a computer game.

The source of inspiration

It seems that Lord Farquaad was inspired by Michael Eisner, the then CEO of The Walt Disney Company. Producer Jeffrey Katzenberg didn’t have a very good relationship with his former employer, and that’s why this was his revenge. Also, there are some speculations according to which Lord Farquaad would be a kind of combination between Napoleon, Stalin and even Hitler.
