Good Girls on Netflix
Beth (Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks) and her best friend Ruby (Retta from Parks & Rec) and younger sister Annie (Mae Whitman) are in trouble. These three best friends have serious money problems! The NBC show, Good Girls tells the unlikely, sometimes funny, sometimes dramatic tale of what happens when three women in Detroit, MI come up against hard financial times?
Beth: A Woman with a Plan
Beth Boland, mother of four is the perfect housewife. She packs lunches with sandwiches with faces made of carrots and olives. She’s the mom who makes dozens of homemade cupcakes and cookies for the class bake sale…gluten and nut-free. Her house is always clean and of course she crafts.
While Beth is busy being the perfect wife and mother, her husband Dean, who owns a car dealership is busy doing other things. Like cheating on his wife, making bad investments, and not paying the mortgage.
When finally Beth learns (the hard way) the extent of Dean’s cheating, she is upset. But she is furious when she finds out that she and her family are on the verge of losing their home, due to Dean’s poor investments and money management skills.
Ruby: Your Ride or Die Best Friend
Ruby has been Beth’s best friend since they were teenagers. Along with Beth’s younger sister, Annie, this trio of loyal friends are each other’s support system aka ‘ride or die‘.
Ruby and Stan Hill are happily married with two children. They are just getting by on Ruby’s low paying job as a waitress and Stan’s minimum wage job as a security guard.
Unfortunately their daughter, 10-year old Sara is seriously ill. She needs an expensive treatment and a liver transplant that their insurance won’t cover. Where are they going to get the $90,000 to save their daughter? [If you are in Canada or the UK, I’m not even going to discuss this crazy insurance system.]
Annie: Baby Sister and Hot Mess
Annie is Beth’s younger sister. Annie’s terrible taste in men, low self-esteem, and ‘leap before you look’ mindset make her a hot mess.
She’s the opposite of Beth in almost every way. Her idea of a home-cooked meal is mac & cheese from a box. She’s not good with housework, handling her finances and her pre-teen daughter, Sadie (who identifies as a boy) is more of the parent than Annie.
Worst yet, her minimum-wage job as at the Fine & Frugal grocery store barely pays the bills, much less enough for a lawyer to fight a custody battle with her ex-husband.
What can they do? Do they get part-time jobs at Starbucks? No! They decide to rob the grocery store where Annie works. But, who knew it was the store laundered money for the gang?
What is the 1st Rule of Grand Theft? Don’t go on a crazy spending spree and attract attention.
And of course Annie goes on a spending spree, buying Sadie everything at the Apple Store, The Gap, and a flashy sports car.
Who is Gang Friend?
Next thing they know there are gangsters in Beth’s kitchen.
Now the ‘good girls’ are mixed up with the sexiest gangster in Detroit, aka ‘Gang Friend‘ played by Manny Montana. All he wants is his money back…but [see 1st Rule of grand theft) they don’t have all of it, thanks to Annie’s spending spree.
And before you know it, they ‘girls’ are on their way across the Canadian border to pick up a package for ‘gang friend’. If you have ever crossed the border to Canada, one thing you should know. Canadians are super nice people, but they are super serious about smuggling drugs into their country. I mean, really, don’t even joke about it!
And this is only episode one. You’ll have to watch Season 1 of Good Girls to answers these questions:
- Mommy! Why is there a man in our treehouse?

- What is the connection between Good Girls and NBC’s Superstore?
