Oprah pulled out all the stops on her Favorite Things show this year. To celebrate her 25th and final year, Oprah did not one, but two Oprah’s Favorite Things shows. I hate to admit it, but I am jealous of those people. I have been watching the Oprah show for almost 20 years, I have read the Oprah’s Book Club books, read O Magazine and lived vicariously though Oprah’s life.
Seriously, let’s face it. Oprah has more money than the Federal Reserve, so her favorite things are way out of my price range. So, I thought, “wait a minute“. I have favorite things too. OK… my favorite things don’t include diamond earrings or lavish trips… and I don’t actually have all of my favorite things (yet). But I can dream can’t I?
Here is my list of Clarabela’s Favorite Things.
What’s not to like? Carbs, sweetness and butter. It’s a simple pleasure, but aren’t they always the best? I LOVE pancakes and bacon. What can compare with the joy of a yummy pancake breakfast with friends? Or a late night pancake-fest after a night os dancing the night away. My absolute favorite place for pancakes is The Original Pancake House. Their pancakes are light and fluffy and they have the best bacon in the world.
I love wearing over-sized flannel pajamas when I am busy writing for Just Chick Flicks, lounging on the sofa reading a book or watching a movie. Victoria Secrets and Target have really nice PJs in an array of colors and whimsical patterns for less than $50. Throw in a pair of comfy slippers and your Sunday afternoon is complete.
Granny Bee’s Candles
While I am lounging in my cozy flannel PJs and comfy slippers, I also like to burn one of Granny Bee’s Candles. My friend and former Corporate Concierge, Molly Carroll started making her a highly scented, long-lasting, candles in 2000. They are amazing. All of Granny Bee’s Candles are off-white in color and come in a simple glass container emblazoned with a bee, so match almost every decor. I love the fresh scent of French Market and Raindrops.
I have a stack of books in every corner of my house. Cookbooks in the kitchen, business and computer books in my office and novels by the bed and stacked in the livingroom. I buy books like some women buy shoes. Right now, I am juggling a few books: Chris Guillebeau’s The Art of Non-Conformity: Set Your Own Rules, Live the Life You Want, and Change the World, the final book in Stieg Larsen’s trilogy, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest and The Wealthy Freelancer. On my list is a series of young adult books that I predict will be as popular as Twilight or Harry Potter, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The story of Katniss, a teenage who is thrust into a fight to the death in The Hunger Games continues in Catching Fire (The Second Book of the Hunger Games).
A few years ago, after a minor surgery my friend Alisha brought me a wonderful get well gift. A fluffy stuffed snuggle bunny and a box of Tea Forte. Not only are they are beautiful triangular, silk tea bags filled with fragrant tea leaves, but they make a lovely cup of tea. Tea Forte has everything from black teas and African rooibos to organic teas. They also have something that I want to try Cocktail Teas. Tea and alcohol… that is an intriguing combination. So I intent to try something new and exciting with Tea Forte’s Cocktail Mixology Set. I will let you know how it goes.
I love to hang out at Starbuck’s with the cool kids, since I don’t drink coffee, I discovered Starbuck’s new full-leaf Awake tea. It is fabulous. There are other flavors like Earl Grey and Chai, but I like my hot and strong…like my men…hehehe!
In this high-tech world of smart phones, Kindles and iPads, I still have a passion for paper products. Stationary, notecards and especially Moleskine Ruled Notebooks . I like to keep a notebook handy for writing down blog ideas and all my other clever thoughts. I also use the Moleskine Weekly Notebook Diary Planner because it combines a calendar/planner and has a page for taking notes. Moleskines have a handy pocket in the back, which is convenient for coupons, business cards and receipts.
When my budget allows, I enjoy a nice manicure and pedicure. After the hot paraffin wax, my hands look and feel soft as a baby’s butt. When my budget does not allow me to splurge on a mani-pedi, I still want to have soft hands, I use Bliss High Intensity Hand Cream. It is wonderful and it smells so good. It comes in a small size, perfect for your purse or the desk drawer in your office.
Miss Jessie’s Curly Buttercreme
I have very thick and kinky hair. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy to be nappy. I love my natural hair, but it can be a challenge. I have tried a million different hair products and nothing seemed to work for my dry, kinky hair. Not until I went to see Kira at the Pure and Healthy Hair Salon in Irving, TX and she used Miss Jessie’s Curly Buttercreme and it changed my life. No more dry fizzies or split ends. This month is BOGO (Buy one, get one) month for Miss Jessie’s products, so I am stocking up on my favorite items.
I love Corner Bakery. When I am running around on errands, shopping or whatever, it is nice to stop by my favorite Corner Bakery for a delicious Chicken Pomodoro Panini and cup of soup. I like to finish off my meal with the best cake ever, their Cinnamon Creme Cake and a cup of tea. Mmmmm! Yum! Delicious food is just one of the reasons I like Corner Bakery. The prices are reasonable and the quality is consistent from one location to the next. They also have FREE Wi-Fi, so it makes a nice place to hang out and work.
The other reason I love them is obvious. It’s a bakery and they have sweets. I can satisfy my enormous sweet tooth in a variety of ways. As I said, the Cinnamon Creme Cake is wonderful, but so are the mini chocolate chip cookies, the Maple Pecan Bar and the Lemon Pound Cake. OK…I love it all and I am a harsh judge when it comes to my sweets. I don’t like wasting my calories on a desert that does not satisfy my cravings. Check them out and let me know what you think.
My next favorite thing has been a life saver. Well at least in the sense that it has saved me the stress and aggravation of constantly searching through my purse for my keys. a pen or my cellphone. If you are like me and like carrying a large purse or tote bag, you know the frustration of reaching into the vast deep pit of your bag for your keys. I don’t know why none of the really cute purses come with pockets and compartments to hold your stuff, but they never do.
Unless you want to carry something nerdy like the Buxton Leather Over the Shoulder Organizer Bag, I suggest using a large purse insert organizer. Fill it with your stuff and slip it right into your purge. There is also a smaller purse organizer that works well for hobo-style bags. The other benefits is when you change purses, all you have to do is movie the purse organizer to the new handbag.
Soon to be Favorites Things
I am just like most of you, a girl on a budget, but I have a few things that would be my favorite things if I had them. I am not an extravagant person, but I like pretty things just like any other woman. One day, these will be my favorite things too.
A Fab Designer Handbag
Carrie on Sexy in the City has a thing for shoes. I like shoes too, but I have big feet. Come on shoe-makers. everyone is not a size 7 1/2. I won’t get into specific sizes here, let’s just say shoe shopping is not a joyous experience for me. But handbags, purses and totes don’t care how big you feet are or how much weight you have gained.
A fabulous designer handbag is an investment. They can last for years and a classic style goes with almost every outfit. Take this Marc by Marc Jacobs Ozzie Square Lucy Satchel for example. How wonderful would I look carrying this classy red number?
MacBook Pro 17″
I love my Mac Mini Desktop computer. Really, I do, but there are times when I want to get out of the house and work on my blog with the cool people at Starbucks or some other trendy cafe. For those times, The Apple MacBook Pro 17″ would be nice. Also as I proceed with my freelance copywriting business, the need to do presentations for potential clients will arise. Do you see how I can rationalize anything? Even a $2000 laptop.
I can’t think of any reason on earth I would ‘need‘ an iPad. They are great for watching movies, reading books and newspapers. There are hundreds of apps, making it a very useful tool. The only reason I can truthfully say I want an iPad is because Oprah says I need one. If Oprah says I need an iPad, then I must need iPad.
Mini Cooper Clubman
I am currently driving a 10-year old Nissan Sentra. I have gotten my money’s worth out of this can and I am now experiencing new car fever. I have enjoyed my little Sentra. But I have wanted a Mini Cooper ever since I saw Charlize Theron and Mark Walberg racing around in The Italian Job in those sporty little cars. The Mini Cooper has great gas mileage and offers a 4-year maintenance packages, which makes it perfect for a single girl like me who would rather spend her money on a new book or designer handbag than an oil change. More rationalization.
