Today, I was in the mood for some action. An action movie that is, so I decided to check out RED, based on cult graphic novels by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner and starring Bruce Willis, Mary Louise Parker, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren. It was refreshing to see this group of ‘mature‘ actors as retired C.I.A. and MI-6 agents who are forced back into action by a secret hit squad.

Frank Moses (Willis) is a retired C.I.A. agent living a quiet and lonely life in Cleveland, Ohio. Each month, Frank calls the State Department’s payroll office, pretending he has not received his pension check. It is just an excuse to talk to Sarah Ross. Sarah works in a mind-numbing government job, but dreams of travel, romance and adventure. They have a cute little phone flirtation going, until the night a team of assassins attacks Frank’s home.
Afraid Sarah might also be in danger, Frank goes to Kansas City and ‘kidnaps’ Sarah for her own good. They embark on a cross-country adventure which teams Frank with his former black-ops buddies. Joe (Morgan Freeman), a 80 year living in a retirement home, Marvin (John Malkovich) hiding out in an underground fortress in a swamp and Victoria (Helen Mirren) who spends her time gardening, arranging flowers and taking the odd hit on the side.
With the help of his friends, Sarah and an old nemesis at the Russian Embassy, Frank breaks into the CIA file room at Langley to discover that secrets from a 25-year-old mission lead to the reason he and his friends are targeted for assassination. Director Robert Schwentke gives us a fair amount of violence and a lot (I mean a lot) of explosions, but there is also quite a bit of humor.
Karl Urban who plays William Cooper, the lead agent in charge of taking out the RED team walks the line between bad guy and a patriot just doing his duty. But I must say, once I got over the idea that he was Dr. Leonard McCoy in Star Trek, I realized that he is really handsome, with “cute hair“. Despite the accent, he is from New Zealand. Mmmm…Hugh Jackman is from New Zealand Austrailia. Is this a trend? Are there more like these two handsome guys from down under? [I digress…back to the movie.]
Without divulging too much of the story, I can tell you that RED is a great date movie. There is an arsenal of weapons, flaming explosions, wise cracking good guys and a fist-pounding fight between Frank and William (Willis and Urban) to keep your man entertained.
Classic movie fans will enjoy the cameo appearance of Ernest Borgnine as Henry, the file room clerk. For the ladies in the audience, there is the budding romance between Frank and Sarah that pops up from time to time. There is also the added treat of seeing the elegant, Helen Mirren in a lovely white evening gown and combat boots, firing a semi-automatic weapon. That’s what I call an Action Chick.
Then there is always the eye candy, Karl Urban.
