Let’s Take A Look At The Nominees…
We are less than 2 weeks away from the biggest movie event of the year, The Oscars. An if you are like me, you have seen some, but not all of the nominated movies. Let’s start with the Nominees for Best Supporting Actress. Usually theis a kind of a secondary role that barely gets noticed. But these ladies had extraordinary roles.
Amy Adams in Doubt
Amy Adams plays Sister James, a young naive nun whose unwitting comments about the actions of the new priest spark the suspicions the older nun, played to perfection Meryl Streep. You may remember Amy from her role in Junebug, for which she received a nomination for Actress in a Supporting Role. Or as the princess in
Penélope Cruz portrays the fiery Maria Elena, a divorced woman still locked in a complex relationship with her ex-husband. This is the second Academy Award nomination for Penélope Cruz. She was also nominated for Actress in a Leading Role for VOLVER in2006. I have not seen Vicky Christina Barclelona. It came and went very quickly from my local movie theater, so if you have seen it, let me know what you thought of the movie and Penelope’s performance.
Viola Davis in Doubt
Viola Davis plays Mrs. Miller, an African-American woman who learns that her son may be the victim of abuse by a priest at his school. If you are a fan of Law and Order, you may remember seeing Ms. Davis in a few episodes ago in that TV series. But other than that, she is not a household name. I hope she wins. Anyone who can hold their own in a scene with Meryl, gets my vote. The amazing thing about this nomination is that she only had one scene in the movie. She and Meryl Streep together were worth the price of admission. To be able to show the depth of the character and see the pain and love that mother feels for her son. All I can say is INCREDIBLE!!!
Taraji P. Henson in
Taraji was hilarious in one of my favorite Chick Flicks, Something New. In The Curious Case of Benjamin Button she plays Queenie, Benjamin Button’s adopted mom. I must say, I am surprised by this nomination. I mean she was good, but I think Ms. Henson got caught up in the Benjamin Button fever that swept the Oscar nominations. Which makes me wonder how they missed Cate Blanchet’s performance. Now that really is a ‘curious case’.
Marisa Tomei in The Wrestler
To be honest, I didn’t see this movie, not because its not a chick flick, but because I hadn’t heard of it until the nominations came out. In The Wrestler, Marisa Tomei portrays a middle-aged stripper involved in a relationship with a down-on-his-luck professional wrestler played by. I give her high marks for being able to convince an audience that she was romantically interested in Mickey Rourke. He looked pretty gross and I don’t think it was just movie make-up.
Have you seen The Wrestler? What did you think of the movie and Marsia and Mickey’s performances? Trivia Bite: Who remembers Marisa on A Different World?
