This is a Guest Post by Andi Fisher.

Last week on the advice of a co-worker I picked up the book Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. She said it was a fantastic love story that she couldn’t put down. And while the love story is definitely appealing, with the boy hero, damsel in distress and evil villain, the surprising element was the fascinating circus history.

Like all novels that get turned into movies, it was with some trepidation that I went to go see Water For Elephants over the opening weekend. I am happy to report that despite some slight adjustments in the screenplay adaptation, the film is equally exhilarating.

Train movies are great, but very few show the history of the day-to-day life of living on a train, particularly a circus train that depicts a fascinating underworld most people aren’t familiar with. Life was hard, it really was “the show must go on,” but despite that, or maybe because of that, bonds between people are made quickly and deeply.

There are not a lot of fancy movie-making techniques, the film lets the story and the performance of the actors shine. The acting is top-notch. I hope there are Oscar nominations coming out of it, because all the actors were exceptional, but I fear it is too early in the season. If there are acting nominations (which would be a shame) then there MUST be ones for costume design. The costumes are beautiful. Exquisite. I want the entire wardrobe that Reese Witherspoon had!

The Cast of Water For Elephants

All three of the main characters gave splendid performances, particularly Reese Witherspoon. Her role as Marlena is quite complex and she effortlessly switches between the dutiful wife and the tempted seductress and survivor. If I hadn’t read the book, she certainly would have had me as confused as she did Robert Pattinson. Her character further illustrates what the performers and workers, especially the women, had to do to survive in the circus world.

Heart-throb, Robert Pattinson (Twilight) is Jacob, the veterinary student who literally runs away to join the circus and falls for the circus owner’s wife. Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) is a wonderfully evil villain as Reese’s jealous husband.

The other female star of the show was Rosie the elephant who you quickly develop a relationship with by virtue of the plight of her story and how she connects all the characters. I have read in several articles that Robert thoroughly enjoyed “acting” with her and slathered himself in peppermints to keep up her affections. I can understand that, as she was delightful.

One thing I think they should have spent a tiny few minutes on in the film is showing where the title Water for Elephants came from. Unless you read the book, the film does not solve the mystery, which I think is a shame. But it does not prevent you from enjoying the movie.

Water for Elephants is a beautiful film full of conflict and fantasy and at the heart of it a beautiful love story. I highly recommend it. It has romance, and action and animals and history. Good versus evil and the trials and tribulations on men and its classes. Seriously something for everyone!

These are some of the romantic love scenes from movies you would not usually think of as Chick Flicks, but the love scenes are unforgettable.

Today is Valentine’s Day; a time for lover’s everywhere to flower each other expensive gifts, dine on fabulously extravagant restaurants and gorge themselves on chocolates. Those of us without dates, significant others or a membership to Match.com will be enjoying a nice glass of wine as we commemorate ‘Single Awareness Day’. Whatever plans you have for February 14th, let’s celebrate love and romance in the movies with some of the most romantic love scenes ever!

Hollywood likes to interchange the term love scene and sex scene. Trust me. When I did a search for clips for love scenes, I found some mess. Some real mess!. What I am talking about is the scene when you know the characters are in love. Maybe is a passionate kiss like in The Notebook or Last of the Mohicans; maybe its a certain look or even love at first sight. Either way, its romantic.

The Way We Were

When I say that The Way We Were is my favorite love story. I am not exaggerating when I say, I have seen it at least 30 times and I know the dialogue. What’s not to like? You got Barbra who is like a whole stick of buttah and Robert Redford at his most blond gorgeousness. Two complete opposites who fall in love. I couldn’t find a clip of the exact scene, but it is in this trailer…”don’t be too serious“….way to melt the buttah, Robert!

Last of the Mohicans

How can a movie about the French-Indian war we romantic? One answer, Daniel Day-Lewis with long, flowing black hair and a buckskin! His love scene in The Last of the Mohicans with Madeline Stowe is one of my favorites.

Moulin Rouge

I love musicals! Believe it or not, I don’t like Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge …except for this song. I love Ewan McGregor’s voice. If he ever decides to retire from acting, he has a career as a singer. This song comes at the end of the movie and (in my opinion) it is the best song in the movie. Come What May, sung by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Enlightenment
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon at MOVIECLIPS.com

Ang Li’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is one of the most incredible action movies ever made. I should say ‘action chick flick’ because the plot centers on unfulfilled love. This scene with Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat makes me cry every time I see it. There is another beautiful scene with them in a tea house, when he holds her hand to his face….oh boy! Check it out HERE.

The Notebook

It’s Not Over
The Notebook at MOVIECLIPS.com

The Notebook has got to be one of the most romantic movies ever made. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as the young couple in love and Gena Rowlands and James Garner as the older couple with a love that never dies. The kissing scene in the rain is a perfect example of a romantic love scene.

Big Fish

Tim Burton is not all about murder, mayhem and spookiness. This one of his non-Johnny Depp movies. Big Fish is wonderful fantasy about a man with dreams and tall tales. Ewan McGregor stars as the young Edward Bloom and Alison Lohman is the object of his affection. In this scene, Burton’s vision of love at first sight is truly magical. It is such a good movie, about true love between a man and a woman and between a father and son. Trust me you will love it.

Surprisingly, some of these love scenes are not from movies you would usually think of as Chick Flicks, but I think the love scenes are unforgettable. The scene in Say Anything when John Cusack standing outside Ione Skye’s bedroom window with a boombox, playing In Your Eyes. Bogart and Bergman saying their final goodbye on a foggy airstrip in Casablanca. A very young and handsome, Richard Gere carrying Debra Winger out of the factory, with Love Lift Me Up Were We Belong, swelling in the background at the end of An Officer and a Gentleman.

There were so many great love scenes and I probably left out one of your favorites. If so, please leave a comment and share it with us.

*Spoiler Alert*

I went into Morning Glory expecting a cute romantic comedy with a little bit of workplace comedy. How could this movie miss? Rachel McAdams as the perky producer of morning show with low ratings; supporting performances by veteran actors Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton; a budding romance with the boyishly handsome Patrick Wilson; produced by J.J. Abrams and written by the same person who wrote The Devil Wears Prada. Sounds like a recipe for a hit to me…Not so much.

Becky Fuller, Career Girl

Rachel McAdams plays Becky Fuller, the perky and hard-working assistant producer of Good Morning New Jersey. All of her hard work goes for nothing when she is laid off due to budget cuts. I feel you pain there, girlfriend. Becky doesn’t give up on her life long dream of working for the Today Show, the top-rated pinnacle of morning shows. With a tight job market and her lack of network experience, the only job she can land as the producer of Day Break, a struggling show at the 3rd rated network. Not exactly the big time. But Becky is still perky. At least she is in New York City, one step closer to the Today Show.

Becky jumps into her new job with floppy bangs and all the perkiness and gung-ho attitude of a cheerleader on crack. Her hair always seems to be in her face and she’s so bouncy,so bubbly and soooo PERKY. It’s kinda irritating.

She wants to make changes and improvements on the show, much to the dismay of the current anchors, Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton) and Paul McVee (Ty Burrell, Phil Dunphy on Modern Family). The cast and crew are not sure what to make of her, but when she fires Paul McVee, they start to take her seriously.

Now the problem is how to replace the co-anchor with no budget. Becky finds a loophole in the contract of veteran newsman Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford) that forces him into the co-anchor chair alongside the former beauty queen, Colleen Peck. As an old school newsman, Pomeroy feels this kind of work is beneath him and refuses to participate in typical morning show entertainment.

When network exec, played by Jeff Goldblum who hires Becky, tells her that Day Break is in danger of being cancelled unless she can significantly improve the ratings, she decides to be outrageous. She sends the weather guy, Ernie Appleby (hilariously played by Matt Malloy) to ride a new roller coaster. The video of his torrential stream of f-bombs goes viral and sparks a series of crazy stunts. But Mike Pomeroy still refuses to take part in any of the on-air foolishness.

Desperate to save the struggling show, Becky practically babysits Harrison Ford’s grumpy, pompous character. The movie attempts to show some kind of a mentor-like relationship between Becky and Mike, but I didn’t see it. Becky’s hyper-perkiness vs. Pomeroy’s grumpiness. Somehow, Pomeroy acquiesces and takes part in the show by bringing them a breaking news story. He and Becky have a talk, all of a sudden they are friends.

The Romantic Comedy w/o The Romance Part

Becky is a determined and motivated career woman, with little time for romance. So when she meets fellow producer, Adam Bennett (Patrick Wilson) she is oblivious to his advances. When someone tells her that Adam is showing her some interest, Becky goes to his office and awkwardly tries to flirt with him.

Somehow he still likes her and they begin something that resembles a romance. They have a few dates at his apartment that end with Rachel McAdams prancing around in her panties. Becky is too focused on her career, watching the news with one eye and Patrick Wilson with the other. She never seems that interested in him and I don’t understand why he continues to pursue her. There is just not enough romance to call Morning Glory a romantic comedy. The only relationship Becky cares about is the one with Mike Pomeroy.

The Today Show Comes A-Callin’

You tell me..is this a job interview outfit?

Due to all her efforts, Mike and Colleen’s on air spats and the foul-mouth of the weatherman, Day Break’s ratings rise as does Becky Fuller’s reputation as a producer. She finally gets an interview with the Today Show, her dream job. Would someone please tell me why Becky goes to work everyday, in a business suit, with her hair in a twist (except for those wayward bangs) at the #3 network’s lowest rated show. When she interviews with the people who could give her the job of her dreams, she wears a frilly beige cocktail dress, with a sweater that doesn’t quite match, hot pink shoes and her hair was flopping all over the place. I don’t get it.

During the interview Becky is so distracted by watching Day Break on the monitors, she isn’t paying attention to her interviewers. When she sees a potential disaster on Day Break, she leaves the interview and runs, who knows how many blocks in those Christian Laboutian hot pink heels back to the Day Break studio. Seriously Becky, this is your dream job. I suppose this is meant to show her loyalty to Day Break and her colleagues. Oh please…this is the big time.

The happy ending comes when Becky and not the boyishly handsome Adam, but grumpy old Mike walk into the sunrise together. (haha I get it…the day break) I guess that makes Morning Glory more of a workplace, rather than a romantic comedy.

I took part in Anomalous Material Fantasy Movie Draft. My goal for this movie was to create a romantic movie, a chick flick that both women and men would enjoy.

Meet The Cast of An UnExpected Song

This is the cast of my fantasy chick flick, An Unexpected Song, directed by J. J. Abrams. I took part in Anomalous Material Fantasy Movie Draft . My goal for this movie was to create a romantic movie, a chick flick that both women and men would enjoy. I picked some of my favorite actors and actresses for my project.

I am sick and tired of what passes for chick flicks these days. Jennifer Aniston, Kathrine Heigl and Gerard Butler are single-handedly ruining the genre with the crappy movies they have released recently. Come on, Hollywood! What’s so hard about making an entertaining movie with intelligent characters and a little romance? Here is my pitch for a my fantasy Hollywood movie: An UnExpected Song.

Sophie Okenedo and Willow Smith star as Allegra Lorraine St. James, the bi-racial daughter of Miriam Richards. Like her father, Duncan St. James, Allegra is musically gift. She has a beautiful singing voice an plays guitar, cello and piano. She is extremely intelligent and has her mother strong-willed nature. Allegra is ambitious and has plans to be a Broadway star with or without the help of her parents.

Being raised in New York City until age 12 and later in London, Allegra struggles with conflicting views about of her racial and cultural heritage and where she belongs in the world, as a Black woman, an American, a Brit or as an artist.

Viola Davis stars as Miriam Richards, an investigative journalist for a well-respected magazine, similar to Time. She is one of the first African-American reporters to work at the magazine and she works hard to be the best. Still single, in her late-30’s, Miriam has had a few serious relationships, but with her fear of abandonment and independent spirit she doesn’t see marriage in her future. All of her energy is spent on her work.

Of course, the luscious Hugh Jackman will star in my movie. He will portray Duncan Scott St. James the gifted classical pianist. Can’t you see Hugh and his long, flowing locks playing a grand piano. yeah, baby!

Born in a rural area of Australia as Jamie Scott. Jamie was the only child of older parents. His mother, a former school teacher who loved music, home schooled young Jamie when he wasn’t helping his father on the farm. Their home was filled with love and music from his mother’s piano or the record player, playing American blues, jazz and Broadway show tunes. Feeling isolated, from kids his own age, a 15-year-old Davie begs his parents to drive him to town for a dance. On the way home, there is a car accident, which kills both his parents. He blames himself for their death.

The sullen and petulant, teenage Davie is sent to live with his wealthy uncle, Charles in England, where they call him by his given name, Duncan Scott St. James. Uncle Charles sends Duncan away to boarding school, where he excels at sports and music, but is also tormented and bullied by the posh boys for his Aussie accent and his humble beginnings. Duncan eventually loses his accent and never talks about his family.

Emily Blunt has a supporting role as Chloe Winston, Duncan’s on-again, off-again girl friend. Chloe is a wealthy British aristocrat and supporter of the arts, who wants to help Duncan further his career and eventually become the symphony’s conductor. She enjoys the attention and power she has garners as a patron of the arts.

As the head of the London Classical Music Society, she also likes being accompanied to charity and other posh events by the handsome pianist. Bu she does not approve of Duncan’s interest in Jazz or other popular music, which she considers crass and common.

Danny Glover is the perfect actor to play, Jeremiah (Jerry) Richards, Miriam’s father. He lives with her in her NY town home. Jerry’s wife dies when Miriam was 10 years old and he raised her as a single father. Born in Chicago, the son of a factory worker and a housemaid, Jerry was the first person in his family to attend college. He is now a Law Professor at Columbia University in New York City. He is very involved in local politics and the Civil Rights movements. His strong views about racial pride were drilled into his daughter Miriam from a very early age.

Jennifer Hudson rounds out my cast, starring as Miriam’s best friend, Patricia (Patty) Belvins. Patty owns a small cafe left to her when her grandmother died. She worked hard and turned the shabby luncheonette into one of New York’s most popular Soul Food cafes. She is smart, witty, and has wisdom beyond her 25 years.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the plot of An UnExpected Song.

I finally saw Twilight: Eclipse and I agree with New York Times columnist A.O. Scott that it’s “robustly entertaining film than either of its predecessors.” It’s the best movie of the saga because has more action, more romance, more angst and more abs (courtesy of Taylor Lautner). There’s something about the story, the characters, the folklore that connects with thousands of females, young and old. The tween girls love the handsome leads and perhaps it awakens something fierce in older women stirring memories of young love. Critics can tear apart the series for its lackluster moments, but all the Twilight bashing can’t stop fans from waiting in line for a midnight screening.

So what is it about the books, the movies, that make it box-office hit? The fact that it can cause an indie singer to shoot a music video for a song inspired by Bella and Edward’s story sums it up nicely.

When these type of cinematic wildfires come along you can analyze them all you want and people still won’t get it. All I know is that I like the Twilight Saga, and I’m okay with that.

Last night, instead of getting some much-needed sleep, I was tweeting with one of my Filmgirl Force friends about movies (of course). Karen from Reel Artsy (@reelartys) is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to indy films. On the subject of indy Chick Flicks, Karen suggested I watch a movie called Timers. I had not heard of it, but the plot seemed quite interesting. It is available for instant viewing on Netflix.

Imagine that you could have a small band implanted to your wrist for a nominal fee that would count down the days until you meet your soul mate. The person you are destined to love for the rest of your life. It tells you the days, hours and minutes until you meet The One. When that perfect One comes into your life, bells ring. Literally ring. No. this is not like nonni juice, the Japanese foot pads or anything that promises you can lose weight without diet and exercise. This is for real scientific fact. At least it is in the movie Timer.

Timer centers around Oona (Emma Caulfield), an almost thirty-something dentist, living in present-day Los Angeles, who is watching her biological clock/Timer very closely. However, Oona’s timer is blank. Does that mean she will not ever meet her true love? Not necessarily, maybe her one true love doesn’t have a timer yet. Thus Oona only dates men without a timer. When they have a couple of good dates, she marches them down to the Timer store (like the store in the mall where you get your ears pierced or a T-Mobile store) to get a Timer installed. But still no bells and no soul mate. Feeling dejected, Oona gives in to the advances of Mikey, the grocery store check-out guy. So what if he is much younger and his Timer is about to go off in a few weeks. It’s just a little temporary fun.

You Can’t Hurry Love

I liked how the director, Jac Schaeffer created an entire society, with customs and behaviors based on having everyone having a Timer. Think about it if you knew you wouldn’t meet your true love until you were 43 years old, what would you do with your life? Maybe you would have mindless affairs with guys whose Timers were about to go off for someone else; like Oona’s step sister, Steph. She lives her life in limbo, working dead-end jobs and having dead-end affairs, knowing that science has proved that she won’t find true love for another 13 years.

Getting a Timer at puberty is another custom. It’s almost like having a quinceanera or a bar mitzvah. Oona’s mother, Marion (played by JoBeth Williams) takes her teenage son, Jesse to get his Timer, which say he has 3 days until he will meet the love of his life. Imagine what it would be like to know the girl in your 7th grade math class will be the future mother of your children. So all day Jesse walks around school looking at every girl to see if the Timer will ring. Nothing. So mom throws a party inviting every teenage girl in the neighborhood.

Are You The One For Me?

Timer asks so many compelling questions? What if you meet someone you really like, but your timers don’t ring? Should you end the relationship? Living in a world where you have a guarantee on true love sounds nice. Would the certainty of the Timer take all the mystery and romance out of love? What happens when a married couple gets Timers installed and their dates don’t match? Do they get a divorce? See what I mean? Lots of questions.

Even with all the questions, Director Jac Schaeffer has made a wonderfully sweet and quirky romantic comedy. Schaeffer, a female director has made a really good Chick Flick. Even though the situation is a bit off-beat, the characters are real and I thoroughly enjoyed Timer!

If you’ve never been into chick flicks (you watched your mom sniffle through Steel Magnolias and outright sob when she watched Beaches), you should try to view college as a time to try new things, and include chick flicks on your list. There are a number of eminently enjoyable films aimed at an all-female audience and you (and a roomful of your girlfriends) could learn a thing or two by watching them. Although chick flicks have earned a bad reputation as tissue-fests, there is something empowering about movies that pander to the female psyche, exposing truths that we should all embrace. Here are a few that you absolutely need to see.

1. Pretty Woman (1990) – a rehashing of the classic Cinderella story (or the hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold). This movie puts a new twist on women’s lib. Granted, she is a prostitute, but every woman can revel in the reawakening experienced by Vivian (Julia Roberts) as she finds love and realizes her own self-worth, refusing to settle for less than what she feels she deserves. This movie proves that chick flicks can carry a message of empowerment without getting all weepy. Bonus: snappy costumes and a decent soundtrack.

2. When Harry Met Sally (1989) – okay, this one might make you squeeze out a few tears (especially during that last scene), but it is one of the best movies ever made concerning relationships, including falling in love, breaking up, faking an orgasm (in a restaurant), and finding that one person you can’t live without, no matter the flaws. This is hands-down the best role Meg Ryan ever played, peppered (on your paprikash) with some funny bits from comedian Billy Crystal. Best one-liner: “I’ll have what she’s having.”

3. Love Actually (2003) – If you’re looking for a diatribe on relationships that leans a little more towards the sappy, you can find it in this film, which BTW, is astonishingly good. You get the trials and tribulations of eight couples in one great movie, from love at first sight, to an old marriage on the brink of disaster, to a boy with some drumsticks trying to impress a classmate. Very cute and chock full of iconic romantic scenarios that will give you a few ideas for your own relationship.

4. Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (1991) – Now, most people might not classify this as a chick flick, per se, but since the lead is a female, I think it makes the cut. Sue Ellen (Christina Applegate) takes on a role familiar to male leads like Michael J. Fox in The Secret of My Success. She must scheme her way into a job. She lies on her resumé to land a job at a fashion company in order to pay the bills and take care of her siblings. What she finds is that, although she can’t do the job she was hired for, she is able to use her talents to save the tanking company, as well as run a household. Go girl power! When in doubt, just say, “I’m right on top of that, Rose!”

5. Mean Girls (2004) – Before Lindsay Lohan started sporting that hefty ankle bracelet, she learned how to dress and accessorize to fit in with the most popular girls in school (too bad it included kicking other girls to the curb). This is a great example of what not to do when it comes to dealing with your sistahs, but you can take a lesson from Lohan’s character, Cady, and learn to admit your mistakes with a modicum of grace and give other girls a hand. Let’s face it, we have enough problems without backstabbing each other.

Sanaa Hamri, the director of one of my favorite chick flicks, Something New does it again with Just Wright, starring Queen Latifah and Hip-Hop performer, Common. Queen Latifah plays Leslie Wright, a physical therapist with a new house in needs of repairs, a job she loves and a mooching cousin named Morgan taking up residence in her guest room. Leslie Wright is like most single women, or at least like me and some of my single friends. She has her life together. She is not waiting for Prince Charming to come and save her. She enjoys her job, but is not career obsessed. Leslie, like many single women is waiting for Mr Right, but that thought doesn’t rule her life. And like most of us single girls, she has gone on her share of dates with seemly great guys, but not the right guy. They like her…for a friend. oooohh…I know, consigned to the friend zone. That is the kiss of death to any possible romance.

A Woman With A Plan

Her cousin Morgan, on the other hand is a woman with a plan. Morgan is played by played by Mrs. Robin Thicke, Paula Patton. She is one of those girls that you see in almost every chick flick. She is sweet, gorgeous and her sole ambition in life is to be the trophy wife of an NBA player (prince, rich man or celebrity). She takes this goal very seriously. Studying the fashions of NBA wives, like a post grad working on a thesis; plotting and planning strategy like a military commander, Morgan is one determined woman.

Armed with a pair of tickets, binoculars, a skin-tight dress and stiletto heels, Morgan goes to a basketball game with Leslie, who is a major fan of the team. What does a fan do? They go to the game in their team’s jersey. So, while Leslie cheers on her favorite team, Morgan checks out the designer handbags carried by the players wives. When Morgan abandons Leslie to go to a party where she hopes to meet some players, Leslie goes home in her beat up old Mustang.

Meanwhile at the gas station

Guess who Leslie meets at the gas station on her way home? Scott McKnight the star player of NY Nets! Skipping a few details so I can get to the good part….Scott invites her to his gala birthday party. Of course, being a good person, she asks Morgan (who thinks she has died and gone to trophy wife heaven) to go along. More skipping....Morgan uses her considerable charm to trap ( and I don’t use that term loosely) Scott and before you can say Christian Laboutain, they are engaged.

See…dreams do come true. Wait a minute! The cute, conniving girl getting the guy. Not in a Sanaa Hamri movie.

Things are going along just fine, well at least for Morgan. She is finally the shopping, dining, fiance of an NBA basketball player. Life is perfect until McKnight suffers a possible career ending knee injury. He might be ok with physical therapy. Great, but Morgan quickly gets rid of the top sports injury therapist in the NBA, who just happens to look like a member of the Swedish Ski Team. I don’t blame her on that one. Wait a minute….my cousin is a physical therapist. She won’t steal my hard-earned man. So Leslie moves into Scott’s home to help him on the road to recovery.

The Plot Thickens

Look for a few nice surprises, like Pam Greer and Lloyd Wright as Queen Latifah’s supportive parents. Phylicia Rashad makes an appearance as Common’s no-nonsense mother, as well a full line up of NBA players like, Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade and Rashard Lewis.

I won’t tell you how the rest of the story goes. I may have said too much already. I enjoyed Just Wright, especially Queen Latifah. I hope she finds more roles like this one. And I was also pleasantly surprised by Common. This is my first time seeing him in a movie. He did a good job in Just Wright. There were some nice scene between the two of them, where you could see their characters connecting on a personal and intimate level. This is what I like about Just Wright and also Something New; the love affair happens slowly and softly, like a dance. They talk and laugh and tell each other their childhood stories, lifelong dreams and that is why they fall in love. Not because She is gorgeous or he is rich, but because they like each other. Then they fall in love. Call me a hopeless romantic, but when you fall in love with your best friend, it’s just wright!
