Sanaa Hamri, the director of one of my favorite chick flicks, Something New does it again with Just Wright, starring Queen Latifah and Hip-Hop performer, Common. Queen Latifah plays Leslie Wright, a physical therapist with a new house in needs of repairs, a job she loves and a mooching cousin named Morgan taking up residence in her guest room. Leslie Wright is like most single women, or at least like me and some of my single friends. She has her life together. She is not waiting for Prince Charming to come and save her. She enjoys her job, but is not career obsessed. Leslie, like many single women is waiting for Mr Right, but that thought doesn’t rule her life. And like most of us single girls, she has gone on her share of dates with seemly great guys, but not the right guy. They like her…for a friend. oooohh…I know, consigned to the friend zone. That is the kiss of death to any possible romance.

A Woman With A Plan

Her cousin Morgan, on the other hand is a woman with a plan. Morgan is played by played by Mrs. Robin Thicke, Paula Patton. She is one of those girls that you see in almost every chick flick. She is sweet, gorgeous and her sole ambition in life is to be the trophy wife of an NBA player (prince, rich man or celebrity). She takes this goal very seriously. Studying the fashions of NBA wives, like a post grad working on a thesis; plotting and planning strategy like a military commander, Morgan is one determined woman.

Armed with a pair of tickets, binoculars, a skin-tight dress and stiletto heels, Morgan goes to a basketball game with Leslie, who is a major fan of the team. What does a fan do? They go to the game in their team’s jersey. So, while Leslie cheers on her favorite team, Morgan checks out the designer handbags carried by the players wives. When Morgan abandons Leslie to go to a party where she hopes to meet some players, Leslie goes home in her beat up old Mustang.

Meanwhile at the gas station

Guess who Leslie meets at the gas station on her way home? Scott McKnight the star player of NY Nets! Skipping a few details so I can get to the good part….Scott invites her to his gala birthday party. Of course, being a good person, she asks Morgan (who thinks she has died and gone to trophy wife heaven) to go along. More skipping....Morgan uses her considerable charm to trap ( and I don’t use that term loosely) Scott and before you can say Christian Laboutain, they are engaged.

See…dreams do come true. Wait a minute! The cute, conniving girl getting the guy. Not in a Sanaa Hamri movie.

Things are going along just fine, well at least for Morgan. She is finally the shopping, dining, fiance of an NBA basketball player. Life is perfect until McKnight suffers a possible career ending knee injury. He might be ok with physical therapy. Great, but Morgan quickly gets rid of the top sports injury therapist in the NBA, who just happens to look like a member of the Swedish Ski Team. I don’t blame her on that one. Wait a minute….my cousin is a physical therapist. She won’t steal my hard-earned man. So Leslie moves into Scott’s home to help him on the road to recovery.

The Plot Thickens

Look for a few nice surprises, like Pam Greer and Lloyd Wright as Queen Latifah’s supportive parents. Phylicia Rashad makes an appearance as Common’s no-nonsense mother, as well a full line up of NBA players like, Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade and Rashard Lewis.

I won’t tell you how the rest of the story goes. I may have said too much already. I enjoyed Just Wright, especially Queen Latifah. I hope she finds more roles like this one. And I was also pleasantly surprised by Common. This is my first time seeing him in a movie. He did a good job in Just Wright. There were some nice scene between the two of them, where you could see their characters connecting on a personal and intimate level. This is what I like about Just Wright and also Something New; the love affair happens slowly and softly, like a dance. They talk and laugh and tell each other their childhood stories, lifelong dreams and that is why they fall in love. Not because She is gorgeous or he is rich, but because they like each other. Then they fall in love. Call me a hopeless romantic, but when you fall in love with your best friend, it’s just wright!

Being a huge fan of the Sex and the City series, I was thrilled when they decided to film the first movie. When the original came out in 2008 I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the film. It was nice to see the gals, but I was disappointed how the story played out.

When news of the second movie started hitting the web, and story lines and photos designed to throw the fans off the scent of the true story were released, I began to be intrigued…had they come up with something that would pique my interest?

I watched the first trailer and knew I would see it, but was still uncertain about whether it would be in theaters or on DVD. I saw the second trailer and knew I would be at my local cinema within the first two weeks! It only took the hint of Aiden entering the picture to seal the deal for me.

Love triangles are alluring and seductive. I had to see how the impact of seeing Aiden would affect the marriage of Big and Carrie. It was a fascinating dynamic to watch during the show, and it seemed to me that this was going to be a crucial fork in the road for Ms. Bradshaw.

So on a boiling hot day while visiting the nation’s capitol last weekend, I sat in the air-conditioned luxury of a gorgeous brick theater in Georgetown (I had to be luxurious, right?) with my husband who had seen neither the series nor the first movie (I know, amazing!) I anxiously awaited the start of the film that would reunite me with my virtual gal pals. I was not disappointed!

To me, the writing for this film was closer to what it was in the series than the first film. There was focus on the girls, and except for the Carrie-Big-Aiden triangle, the focus stayed on them as women, without pulling in relationships too much. Of course it would not be Sex and the City without sex and men, but they were a secondary character.

Each of the ladies’ story lines had something interesting about them and I enjoyed immersing myself into the lives of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte once again. To me, it was a sort of reunion, a throwback to the days when they were sitting around eating brunch at the Sunday dinette. I had really missed them, and there they were again.

The clothing was fabulous, sometimes over-the-top, also to be expected, but absolutely stunning none-the-less. The girls were beautiful as well, although I felt that Carrie and Miranda had way too much make-up on and could have got a way with a more natural look, which is what Samantha and Charlotte had. Samantha had the absolute best one-liners, Carrie’s were good too, but some seemed a little forced. Again, the writing was good.

The scenery in Abu Dhabi (actually filmed in Morocco) where most of the film took place, was beautiful and such a fanciful locations for the girls. It was hilarious to see how the girls dealt with the restrictive Arabic culture, with some wins and some losses. They get themselves into a little bit of trouble, nothing unusual there, and it adds to the humor of the movie.

One of my favorite scenes was towards the end when the ladies are in a spice market and Samantha’s purse is knocked out of her hands spilling the contents every where, including a ton of condoms, it’s Samantha’s purse after all, and she picks them up and screams at the gawking men as she shakes condoms at them, “yes, I have sex. Yes, I have sex!” Classic Samantha and hilarious.

I loved the ending as well. I am a Mr. Big fan and he did not disappoint. I won’t give the ending away, but felt it was perfect. Will there be a Sex and the City 3? I don’t know, but if they do make it, and the writing is as good as Sex and the City 2, I’ll be there to see it!

Ideally, I would like to say that I saw every movie that was nominated in this year’s Best Picture Oscar race, but I cannot tell a lie. There are some I just didn’t see. Let’s be honest, this blog is called Just Chick Flicks. I have my hands full trying to see movie that fit into that genre.

OK…then how come you didn’t see An Education?

Well… see…what happened. Truthfully, That movie came and went before I had a chance. It could have happened while I was standing in line for Avatar. I am not sure. But fortunately, I have a wonderful community of movie bloggers who are apparently a lot more dedicated. I am glad they have my back on this.

So, let’s take a look at the movie reviews and commentary from my fellow movie bloggers.

An Education

Julian Stark-Movies & Other Things

“Proof that films don’t need to be lengthy to be good, Lone Scherfig’s An Education is one of 2009’s best films…”

It’s Just Movies

“An Education” is destined to be the starting point for Carey Mulligan’s success, but others such as Sasgaard and Molina are well-cast and well-acted. Pair acting along with writing that is both quirky and dramatic and excellent pacing and you get a film that does not offer a dull moment.

The Hurt Locker

Red Carpet Crash

“In the same way “Platoon” told the story definitively of being a soldier in Vietnam, “The Hurt Locker” sets the standard for telling the story of serving in Iraq. It is a masterpiece, and should be treated as such.”

Reel Talker

“Renner was unforgettable as the adrenaline junkie always looking for his next hit. But I think the biggest star of the movie was director Kathryn Bigelow whose intense direction stole the show and truly depicted a country that had essentially become one large ticking bomb…”

Inglourious Basterds

1416 And Counting

“Inglourious Basterds is a long, lengthy work of beauty and horrible things. It is a comment on cinema the likes of which Tarantino has never approached before. Some of the scenes…will be long, long remembered.”

Red Carpet Crash

“Inglourious Basterds” is both a tribute to the great World War II films that came before it – if you look closely, you can see elements of “Force 10 From Navarone,” “The Dirty Dozen,” or “The Great Escape” – and a fully modern take on terrorizing Hitler’s men behind enemy lines.

It’s Just Movies

This is a mesmerizing film from start to finish. I can’t remember the last time two-and-a-half-hours-plus in a theater didn’t feel like two and a half hours. Even with stretches of protracted dialogue, the film breezes along without feeling rushed; by the time the end credits started, I was ready for more.

Reel Talker

“Director Quentin Tarantino has done something here that I have never seen him do with any other movie–he made me totally forget I was watching a Quentin Tarantino movie.”

A Serious Man

It’s Just Movies

If the film were in less capable hands, then it surely would have been sub par, as “A Serious Man” is a character comedy, and the relationships between these characters is what keeps us glued to the screen…After the film concludes, it is surely evident that this is one of the Coen Brother’s most thought-provoking films, as well as their most personal.

Reel Talker

“Larry Gopnik is at the end of his rope. But, God bless him, he is still hanging on to the last stubborn piece of sanity he’s got left in Ethan and Joel Coen’s A Serious Man.”…

Up

Reel Artsy

“An incredible love story, a funny adventure, and an overwhelming drama, Pete Docter’s animated fable is a remarkable film. The nearly wordless first act is a masterpiece of visual storytelling…”

It’s Just Movies

“It’s a lovely picture of animation done right. Animation that stays true to its characters central idea and guiding spirit. And it shows the care the Pixar folks take in their characters.”

“When it comes to social relevance, no film from 2009 might fit that bill anymore than Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air.”

“Like his previous movies “Thank You For Smoking” and “Juno,” Reitman delivers an “A” caliber movie that is funny, smart and a bit charming. Reitman questions the true nature of why we have relationship in a way that not condescending to the viewer. He allows the characters to develop and question their personal attachments, or lack thereof.
And so we have a triangle, in Clooney, Kendrick, and Farmiga. Not a love triangle, though; more of a lifestyle triangle. All three actors are outstanding.

Well, I finally saw The Blind Side. It has been a busy movie season and every time I went to the theater to see this movie, it was sold out. But as I said before, there is nothing more popular in the South than high school football. In fact, until I saw the movie, I thought Sandra Bullock’s character in the movie was a Texan. It might have been the frosted blond hair that confused me for a minute.

The Story

Based on the true story of Baltimore Ravens All-American offensive left tackle, Michael Oher, The Blind Side” depicts the story a homeless African-American youngster from a broken home, who taken in by a wealthy white family in Tennessee. With the help of teachers and a tutor (played by Kathy Bates), Oher works hard to improve his grades and to become a star on the high school’s football team and eventually win a college scholarship. Like most stories of this type, the poor person teaches the rich people a valuable lesson about life. By his presence, in the Touhys’ lives. Michael Oher helps them to appreciate the home, comforts and family connection that they took for granted. Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome.

The Stars

Chick Flick fans loved Sandra Bullock in comedies like Miss Congeniality, Two Weeks Notice and most recently The Proposal. Sandra has also demonstrated her ability to take on more serious and dramatic parts in movies like 28 Days and Crash. Although she is popular with audiences, I don’t think Hollywood has ever taken Sandra Bullock seriously. At least not until now. In her role as tough as nails southern housewife, Leigh Anne Touhy, Sandra gives the most acclaimed performance of her career. The Blind Side gives Sandra Bullock a chance to show us another side of her talents. The Blind Side is one of those movies that enjoyed big word of mouth success and Sandra’s performance was praised. But who would have thought that she would receive an Oscar nomination or that The Blind Side would be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar?

The Awards

The Blind Side is nominated for two Academy Awards. Sandra Bullock has already won he Critic’s Choice (tied with Meryl Streep), Golden Globe and Screen Actor’s Guild Awards for Best Actress. But will she win the Academy Award? What are The Blind Side’s chances of win the Best Picture Oscar?

What did you think of The Blind Side and Sandra Bullock’s performance?

It has taken me quite a while to write the review of Precious. Not because I didn’t like the movie or had a case of writer’s block, but because Precious was such a powerful movie, that I had to step away from it for a while and look back on the movie from a distance. I had heard about Precious when it won at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009. Then one day, as I was browsing through Half-Price Books, I saw the book Push by Sapphire on which the movie is based. It is only about 175 pages, but each page is full of powerful and intense images of the abuse that the main character faces. Not only is she sexually abused by her father, but she bears two children by him, one of which has Downs syndrome. She is also physically, emotionally and sexually abused by her monster of a mother, played by Mo’Nique.

Precious: Based on the novel Push, by Sapphire (the official title) takes place in Harlem, New York in 1987. Claireece Precious Jones is sixteen years old and pregnant for the second time by her father. She is a victim not only of her abusive family, but also of society. She is obese and the victim of jokes and teasing by her neighbors and classmates. She goes to school each day, but can’t read or write beyond a 1st or 2nd grade level. It seems as though her life is going nowhere, when a counselor, played by a very unglamorous Mariah Carey offers her a chance to improve her life by enrolling in an alternative school that will help her get her GED.

There Precious meets Miss Blue (Paula Patton), a teacher who cares and wants to help her. In the Each One, Teach One School, Precious finally finds friends and a new sense of self. It is the first time in her life that she meets people who truly care about her. Director Lee Daniels has done an incredible job of not only putting the novel on the screen, but he was able to bring performances out of non-actors like Gabourey and Mariah that are sincerely authentic. In her first acting job ever, Gabourey Sidibe, a psychology student at NY’s Mercy College brings to life the sadness and hopeless that Precious feels at the beginning of the movie, and as we watch her change and grow stronger, we can see that even though she had many obstacles, there is hope.

Golden Globe & SAG Award winner, Mo'Nique

Mo’Nique’s performance as the horrible, ghetto mother from hell, Mary Jones is chilling. We have seen Mo’Nique in other movies and as a comedienne. But as Mary Jones, she went ’somewhere else‘. It was RAW. That is the only word I can think of that describes her performance. Mary Jones is a woman who allows her boyfriend to molest her young daughter and blames the daughter for ’stealing her man. Her only feelings for Precious and her grandchildren are attached to the welfare check they represent. Mo’Nique has already won the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Awards for her performance and if there is any justice, she will take home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar as well.

Watching Precious made me think about how many Mary Jones are there out there walking around who are mentally abusing their children. I thought about how many girls like Precious walk the hallways of their schools being ignored and poorly educated by the school system. Perhaps there are others even worse off then Precious. It made me think….

A guest post by Jenna at Chick Flick Reviews.

Where The Wild Things Are

Like most people, I have been looking forward to Where the Wild Things Are since I first saw the trailer months ago (after which I listened to the Arcade Fire’s song “Wake Up” on repeat for weeks). I am pleased to report that Screenwriter Dave Eggers and Director Spike Jonze do not disappoint. Where the Wild Things full-length feature film is a timeless tale of childhood acceptance, adventure, and imagination that will undoubtedly become a classic, much like Maurice Sendak’s picture book did before it.

The film is truly a work of art, composed by a number of talented individuals, including Eggers, who turned a ten-sentence children’s book into a 300-page novel (called “Wild Things”), and Spike Jonze, who co-wrote and directed the film. Jonze opted to use a handheld camera for many of the scenes, which added a convincingly adventurous feel to the Wild Things world.

For those unfamiliar with the story, it follows a young, imaginative boy, Max (ironically played by a boy named Max Records), who puts on a wolf suit, and makes mischief around his home. When his mother becomes furious with his shenanigans, she sends him to his room without dinner, where he then imagines that he is king on an island of wild creatures.

Eggers’ version elaborates on Max’s loneliness and rebellion, throwing in an older sister who is becoming “too cool” to hang out, and a divorced mother who has invited her new boyfriend into their family’s home. Max becomes angry and bites his mother (Catherine Keener), then runs away in to the night, eventually finding a boat (obviously imagined) that takes him to the Wild Things island.

The Things are all spitting images of Sendak’s drawings (Eggers and Jonze did work closely with Sendak, now 81 years old, throughout production), and they are the mastermind creation of none other than Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

Even more breathtaking than the beast’s attire was the island scenery (filmed in Australia, of course) where all of the wild rumpus takes place. Upon arrival, Max convinces the Wild Things that he is their king and he will bring peace to their broken community.

At first, I wondered how these beasts could be so angry and violent, and I was a bit disappointed that they were not exactly as my youthful mind imagined. But soon I reasoned that, like the many moods of Max himself, each Thing has a distinct personality; Judith (Catherine O’Hara) is unpleasant, but in love with Ira (Forest Whitaker) who reciprocates her feelings, Douglas (Chris Cooper) is reserved, Alexander (Paul Dano) is often ignored, and Carol (James Gandolfini) has a short temper and an intense longing for attention from the motherly KW (Lauren Ambrose).

The characters are serious and heartfelt, yet they don’t lose any of their magic. Where the Wild Things will charm audiences as one of the most real and universal fantasy films they have ever seen. Kids and adults alike will relate to Max’s anger and isolation, as well as to the Wild Things all-too-common social problems.

Backed by an impeccably appropriate soundtrack (Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, along with a children’s choir), and two surprise creatures, Bob and Terry, who stole the movie for me (you’ll have to watch, then let me know if you agree!), Where the Wild Things Are is an ageless classic, not to be missed. The wild rumpus starts October 16 in theaters everywhere.

Amy Adams and Meryl Streep are together again after their Oscar nominated performances in Doubt. But even though they play the title characters in Julie and Julia, they don’t have any scenes together. As a matter of fact, they are separated not only by an ocean, but by more than 30 years.

Julie

Julie & Julia is the story of one woman who is inspired by another women to achieve her dreams. It tells the parallel stories of Julie Powell and Julia Child. Julie Powell (played by Amy Adams),is a frustrated employee at a government bureaucracy who decides to write a blog. And like most bloggers, she writes about her passion, which happens to be cooking. She uses Julia Child as the inspiration for her blog, The Julie/Julia Project.

“Government drone by day, renegade foodie by night. Too old for theatre, too young for children, and too bitter for anything else, Julie Powell was looking for a challenge. And in the Julie/Julia project she found it. Risking her marriage, her job, and her cats’ well-being, she has signed on for a deranged assignment.

All the while she gains a few pounds (its all that butter) and some insights into herself and gets a book deal. I really like the blogging parts of the movie. I understand her, because I have learned a lot about myself since I have been writing this blog. I don’t have a book deal and there isn’t a movie about my life on the horizon (but if there ever is, I want Halle Berry to play me-I’m just sayin’), but the more I do this the more I learn. Oh yeah…the review… So she cooks all this wonderful food.

Julia

Julia Child, played by Meryl Streep is the wife of a diplomat living in France. Meryl’s The Devil Wear Prada co-star Stanley Tucci plays her husband, Paul Child. After working for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during WWII and traveling the near east, she was used to a little adventure. The 6′ 2″, Julia was not content to be a housewife. She eventually decides to follow her passion for French food. She learned to cook, wrote a monumental cookbook and changed everything. I am not sure , but I think Julia Child was the first celebrity chef. Her PBS television series, The French Chef was part cooking lesson and part comedy due to Julia’s personality.

Nora Ephron directed Julia and Julia, which is based on Julie Powell’s Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously and Julia Childs’ My Life in France. Meryl Streep does a wonderful job of portraying the larger than life Julia Child. I really enjoyed this movie for the way it told the stories of two women who were searching for way to improve themselves and who both found themselves in food.

I have been complaining asking for better chick flicks for a while now. I am on a campaign to let the world know that chick flicks don’t have to be sappy love stories about love starved females. They should be movies that appeal to women and tell our stories in an entertaining way. Julie & Julia satisfied my appetite for a really good chick flick.

One last word of advice: Don’t watch this movie on an empty stomach. After watching Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci consume sumptuous meals and Amy Adams prepare Julia Child’s Boeuf Bourguignon, Chocolate Souffle’ and the list goes on. Well, all I can says is, my friend and I left the theater with an overwhelming desire for CAKE!

Refreshing!

That’s the first word I thought of when I saw 500 Days of Summer. The movie stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel as unlikely lovers in this off beat and refreshing romantic comedy.

This is a boy meets girl story. It is not a love story.

The movie tells the story of Tom Hansen (Gordon-Levitt), a young greeting card artist and wanna-be architect who longs to meet the perfect girl, fall in love and get married. See what I mean about refreshing? Enter Summer… Summer Finn, that is. Zooey Deschanel’s Summer is the “girl next door” that all the guys seem to fall for. She’s cute and funny and quirky and if she wasn’t so dang much fun, she would be the kind of girl that all the other girls hate. So naturally Tom falls for Summer. But as the narrator says (did I mention there is a narrator?) , this is not a love story.

The thing that makes Summer a very different Chick Flick character is she doesn’t believe in love. Gasp! She just wants to date, have fun with no commitments. (I think I heard applause from the men in the audience). 500 Days of Summer follows the couple as things go from idyllic to horrific in a series of non-linear vignettes.

One of the other refreshing things about 500 Days of Summer, is that it is musical. No, its not a musical, but the way music is used in the movie it helps to carry the story along. For instance, Tom starts to fall for Summer when he learns that they share a love of The Smiths. He is listening to “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want“. Or when he walks to work, feeling on top of the world, the morning after (well, you know) and bursts into dance to Hall and Oates’ “You Make My Dreams Come True“. Regina Spektor’s “Us” runs throughout the movie as we watch poor Tom go through the highs and lows of (you guessed it) 500 days of Summer. You really should check out the soundtrack.

This type of film making certainly is not main stream, but again the word refreshing comes to mind. Take this scene for instance; where after breaking up with Tom, Summer invites him to a party. He is desperate to get her back and imagines how the evening will go. (Yeah right…like you haven’t rehearsed an important date in their minds 100 times before hand?) There is a split screen of the party.

Expectation vs. Reality

Best known for directing music videos. Marc Webb has made a funny and entertaining movie that doesn’t follow a traditional style of story telling. But you never get bored, which is more than I can say for some movies I’ve seen recently. And some how I couldn’t help hoping that things might work out for Summer and Tom. Maybe it just the romantic in me. I love a happy ending. But it does have a happy ending, just not the one you expect.

Have you seen 500 Days of Summer? What did you think?
