It’s Oscar Nominations Time!

Yes, it’s my favorite time of the year…Oscar season!

The Oscar nominations were announced today and there weren’t that many surprises. Last week’s Golden Globe Awards was just a warm up for  the ‘big boy’, Mr. Oscar. With such a sad lack of chick flicks in theaters this year (again), it is hard I have favorites, but you know I do.  [More about that later]

I am sure you have your favorites too. Which movie do you think is the Best Picture of the Year? Which actor and actress do you want to win?

Highlights and Oscar Snubs

There are a couple highlights in this year’s nominations as well was a few snubs. First of all, U2 is nominated for Best Original Song for “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. [Speaking of which, where is Idris Elba on this list?]

No Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis? The Coen Brothers’ movies are like single malt scotch. They are an acquired taste…you either love them or you have them.  You would the combination of quirky Coen Bros. characters, 60’s folk music and a bit of  Justin Timberlake thrown would be worth of  more than a nomination for  Cinematography and Sound Mixing.

A Spoonful of Sugar Didn’t Save Mr. Banks. Tom Hanks, nor Emma Thompson , Disney magic or even Mary Poppins herself could scare up any major nominations for  Saving Mr. Banks.  The best they could do is a nomination for Best Original Score.

The Final Score

Having the most nominations is no guarantee of winning the most awards. Just ask The Color Purple.
