December is an exciting time of year for movie lovers. With award nominations looming just a few weeks away, December is always filled with oscar-worthy movies and top-notch performances. This year is no exception, Robert Downy Jr. and Jude Law return as Sherlock and Dr. Watson; Tom Cruise takes on yet another impossible mission and David Fincher brings us the long awaited Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
December Chick Flicks
Although December may not be heavy with chick flicks, but are a several movies with major movie stars and award potential.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The english movie version of Stieg Larsen’s popular novel of the same name. The story is a tense action thriller starring Daniel Craig as investigative journalist, Mikael Blomkvist who is asked to help search for a woman who has been missing for 40 years. Rooney Mara plays the title role, Lisbeth Salander , a young computer hacker with lots of secrets.
This is the closest thing this month to a chick flick, so I am anxious to see how director, David Fincher handles this material and how this movie compares to the original Swedish movies, starring Noomi Rapace. Release Date: December 21
The Iron Lady
Meryl Streep stars in this biopic about the life of Margaret Thatcher, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, with a focus on the price she paid for power. This is bound to put another notch on Meryl’s Oscar nomination belt. Also starring Jim Broadbent and Richard E. Grant. Director: Phyllida Lloyd Release Date: December 25
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Young Thomas Horn stars a 9 year-old boy who is an amateur inventor, jewelry designer, astrophysicist, tambourine player, and pacifist who goes on a search of New York for the lock that matches a mysterious key left by his father who was killed in the September 11 attacks.
Stephen Daldry directs this movie which also stars Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. Release Date: December 21
Haywire
Starring Ewan McGregor and Michael Fassbender, this movie really interests me. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, Haywire centers around a black ops soldier (Gina Carano) who is looking for revenge after she is betrayed during a mission. In addition to McGregor and Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas and Antonio Banderas also star. Limited Release: December 25
In the Land of Blood and Honey
Angelina Jolie take the director’s seat in this action During the Bosnian War, Danijel, a soldier fighting for the Serbs, re-encounters Ajla, a Bosnian who’s now a captive in his camp he oversees. Their once promising connection has become ambiguous as their motives have changed. Limited Release: December 25

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Guy Ritchie directs Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty, played by Jared Harris (Lane Pryce from Mad Men). Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) also stars. Release Date: December 21
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
I am not sure if we really need another Mission: Impossible movie, but Tom Cruise and Brad Bird brings us this latest adventure of the IM Force. This time with Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton.
This time the IMF is shut down when it’s implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin, causing Ethan Hunt and his new team to go rogue to clear their name. Simon Pegg, Michael Nyqvist (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) and our favorite hottie from LOST, Josh Holloway also star. Release Date: December 16
Something for the Whole Family
The Adventures of Tintin
Steven Spielberg is a busy man this month, bringing us two great stories that the whole family will enjoy, Tintin and The War Horse. In the 3D animated adventure movie, Tintin and Captain Haddock set off on a hunt for a sunken treasure ship commanded by Haddock’s ancestor.
Based on the popular European comics by Herge, The Adventures of Tintin has an all-star cast, featuring Daniel Craig, Jaimie Bell and Andy Serkis.
We Bought a Zoo
Director: Cameron Crowe directs Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Thomas Haden Church in the family flick about a father who moves his young family to the countryside to re-open a broken-down old zoo. Release Date: December 16
War Horse
Steven Spielberg is in the director’s seat again with the film version of the Broadway play, War Horse. The story follows a young man named Albert, played by Jeremy Irvine and his horse Joey. When Joey is sold to the cavalry during World War I, Albert joins the army to save his horse. Release Date: December 25
