The movie Eat, Pray Love, starring Julia Roberts is about a woman who embarks upon a journey of self-discovery. Her journey takes her to exotic locales, where she indulges her senses and learns to enjoy life. In the movie and the novel, Elizabeth travels to Italy, India and Bali.
Eat, Drink, Eat
Who wouldn’t like the freedom to take off and travel to taste delicious delicacies, learn the wisdom and culture and meet the people of a strange new places? I am not an adventurer by nature, but I love meeting new people and tasting great food. Pack your luggage and get ready to travel with me.
My trip of discovery will be more eating than anything. But it will be FUN! I love music, so my first stop will be Copenhagen. I have always longed to visit Denmark for the Montreux Jazz Festival and smørrebrød (open-faced sandwich). My next stop is Spain. I would love to rent a convertible and take a leisurely drive through Madrid, Barcelona and the Spanish countryside, sampling tapas and wine along the way. If it were not for my morbid, all-encompassing fear of snakes, I would like to visit Kenya. That being the case, the final leg of my journey is not at all exotic– New York City. But just think about the food. New York City has more than 20,000 restaurants, not to mention the museum and Broadway. Where would you go?

I would backpack across europe, and south america with my six siblings, parents, husband, and our three kids. Spend a little time in Asia. Really enjoying both the various nature as well as the many major historical sites.
I would start in Jerusalem. I went to school there for a bit and I miss it everyday. I would then move over to Egypt to see the pyramids.
Then I would start making my way through Europe and end in Paris. I don’t think I would come back for a while.
I admit that I haven’t seen the movie because of teasing from my buddies. (whispers) but I’m going…
The Grand Canyon: I have lived in the United States all my life and I have never visited this place. It’s a place I fantasize about because of how people testify about it. That your life will never be the same once you see it with you own eyes. I want that experience, and one day I will go there…
The Eiffel Tower: Paris is called the city of Love. Pictures of it only make me want to go there all the more. I imagine it a place of friendly yet conversational people, great restaurants and cozy bed and breakfasts.
Venice: I want to visit this place because it is completely surrounded water, and because artwork and rare paintings.
I would love to go to the Serengeti and see animals in it. It scares me that I want to go there, but I hate zoos because their portrayal of wildlife cannot be captured and maintained.
The Vatican: Simply because it home to many of the world’s treasures and that it is said to be high security. To be able to walk around and see all of the artwork there would probably be too much for me to even fathom.
Then I can die.
Thanks
M.
@Micheal: Thanks for submitting your ideal journey. It is nice to have the male point of view.
I would EAT in Greece, PRAY in Israel, and LOVE in between:)

I would travel through Australia & New Zealand, hiking, eating local cuisine & swimming in the waters:)
I’d have to EAT some sushi in Japan (I’d pick Tokyo – so I could shop too).
I’d PRAY at the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul (it’s been a basilica & a mosque).
And I’d round out the trip at a monument to LOVE, the Taj Mahal, in Agra, India.
{Plus I’d get to cross 3 things off my Ultimate To DO list!!!}
Man… If only…
My own version of Eat, Pray, Love would be a journey from Thailand to experience their food and culture first hand rather than from take-out places in the US. I was raised Catholic, so understanding the historical locations of Isreal would be an amazing journey through my own faith, and then finally, I feel in love with Kenya when I worked there a decade ago, and would love to rekindle that love. So from Thailand, to Isreal, and Kenya I would be able to eat, pray and love, much in the same way as Ms. Roberts (and Ms. Gilbert of course).
This is one of my favorite topics and I could write about it over and over again. I did a post on it here: http://www.misadventureswithandi.com/2010/03/my-verison-of-eat-pray-love.html, but in summary I would spend 2 months in Japan, 2 weeks in Hong Kong, 2 weeks in Thailand, 2 weeks in Vietnam, 2 weeks in South Korea, 1 month in Portugal, 1 month in Spain, lastly 3 months in Italy and 3 months in France! I would eat, eat, eat and ENJOY!
@Andi: Your trip sounds fabulous, especially the part about Spain and France. I hope you get a chance to take this trip one day.
