New Chick Flicks on DVD In April 2010

I have been absent, but I am back at my keyboard. But It is a brand new Mac keyboard along with my new Mac Mini computer. My old Dell gave me 9+long years of faithful service and was put to rest just days after I received my year-end bonus. It held on as long as it could. But now I am buzzing along with modern technology and feel inspired to write about  movies!

You may not have seen all of the Oscar nominated movies, but now is the time to catch up on your movie viewing.  Several of 2009’s biggest hits will arrive on DVD in April, including the mega-hit Avatar.

April

The mega-hit of the year, Avatar will be released on DVD on April 22 with a special edition DVD/Blu-Ray combo. He replaces his twin brother on a top-secret mission on a  the planet  Pandora. Zoe Saldano, Sigourney Weaver, and millions of dollars worth of CGI also star in Avatar.

Just Chick Flicks Reviews: Avatar

Crazy Heart

Veteran actor Jeff Bridges won a well-deserved Best Actor Oscar for his role as the washed-up country-western singer, Bad Blake in Crazy Heart. After many years of being an alcoholic, Bad Blake gets another change at his career and another change at love with a journalist, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The Young Victoria

Emily Blunt, who was so wonderful in The Devil Wears Prada and Sunshine Cleaning is everywhere these days. Early this year she starred with Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins  in The Wolfman. In The Young Victoria, a lavish historical drama Emily plays the title role.  The young inexepirienced Victoria, with the help of her husband Prince Albert (Rupert Friend) becomes  of Britain’s Queen Victoria. This is truly a great love story.

The Lovely Bones

Peter Jackson directs the movie based Alice Sebold’s bestselling novel,  The Lovely Bones.  Saoirse Ronan plays Susie Salmon, the 14-year-old girl who is murdered  that narrates The Lovely Bones from her “in-between place”  before going to heaven. Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz play Susie’s distraught parents and Stanley Tucci gives a disturbing performance as the suspected murderer.

It’s Complicated

Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin star in It’s Complicated, a romantic comedy about exes who begin an affair after being divorced for 10 years. Jane (Streep) is the mother of three grown kids, has  her own business get along pretty well  with her ex-husband Jake (Baldwin) who now has a gorgeous young wife . Things get complicated when  Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son’s college. After a couple a lot of drinks, they wake up in bed together. Another complication is the budding attraction between  Jane and  Adam (Steve Martin), an architect  who is hired to remodel Jane’s kitchen. Should Jane and Jake move on with their lives, or is love truly lovelier the second time around?  It’s… complicated.

Dear John

Lasse Hallstrom directs Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia, Jennifer’s Body) in the movie version of another Nicholas Sparks novel. In Dear John, the young lovers are separated by war, so keep your tissues handy.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Heath Ledger tragically died during the filming of  The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which shut down production for several months.  Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell  came to the aid of Director Terry Gilliam agreeing to step in and  finish Ledger’s role. After a premise  clever rewrites, the film was completed with the actors playing a man whose appearance changes as he travels between imaginary worlds.

A Few of My Personal Favorites

The Thomas Crown Affair

You know about my ongoing love affair with Pierce Brosnan. Well, one of my absolute favorite Pierce movies is The Thomas Crown Affair, a remake of the classic Steve McQueen movie. Pierce stars with Renee Russo as a millionaire who just happens to enjoying stealing priceless works of art as a hobby. The chemistry between Pierce and Renee is incredible. They are worthy adversaries who make this caper movie a joy to watch.  There are rumors  a sequel is in the works. I hope so.

Tombstone

I don’t usually like Westerns. Sorry John Wayne, but shoot em’ ups are just not my style. However, Tombstone is another story. Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as the eccentric Doc Holliday are perfect together as the iconic gunslinger. There is also a love story between Wyatt and the actress Josephine  Marcus (Dana Delaney). I also love movies with memorable quotes (thus my love of the movies of the Coen Brothers) and Tombstone is ‘full to burstin‘ with quotable lines. The best one: “I’m Your Huckleberry”.
