For the Young Chicks

With the kiddies out of school for the summer, you may be looking for some entertainment to occupy their time and their minds. This month, there are a few new movies on DVD that might help.

InkHeart

51dudU0xToL._SL160_ Brendan Fraser stars as Mo ‘Silvertongue’ Folchart, a man with a very special talent.  When he reads, he makes the  characters in the book come to life. While reading Inkheart, a story set in magical medieval town, he brings three characters to life;  Capricorn and Basta, two villains, and Dustfinger, a fire-eater.

His 10-year old daughter, Meggie learns about her father’s magical abilities and father and  daughter are off on an adventure  searching for a long-lost book that will help reunite a with missing relative.  Look for the wonderful Helen Mirren, who also stars. This movie reminds me of  The Neverending Story in the way it shows children the wonder and the marvel of books  that transcend the imagination. Inkheart is based on the popular book by Cornelia Funke. Also in the series Inkspell and Inkdeath. Sounds like a trip to Barnes & Noble is in order. These are very THICK books and could keep your young chicks busy for the rest of the summer.

Phoebe In Wonderland

Phoebe in WonderlandDakota’s little sister Elle Fanning stars in this fantastical story of a 9-year-old girl, who just  can’t seem to  follow the rules. She finds enlightenment from her drama teacher (Patricia Clarkson) and her mother (Felicity Huffman) when she tries out for the school’s production of Alice in Wonderland.

Confessions of a Shopaholic

Shopoholic DVD Isla Fisher stars in this a hilarious romantic comedy about  Becky, a slave to fashion who really wants a job writing for a high-fashion magazine in New York City. But she ends up working as a personal finance columnist. Who would believe  her column actually becomes a hit? Of course, she  falls for her handsome played by Hugh Dancy. From the best-selling novel, Shopaholic is a must for any true Chick Flick fan.  Why not make it a Chick Flicks double feature with He’s Just Not That Into You.

CHESS in Concert

If you love musicals, you will love this production of  CHESS in Concert. It stars Josh Groban, Idina Menzel (Wicked, RENT) and the incredible Adam Pascal (RENT, Aida).  Chess In Concert features the music of ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson  (Mamma Mia) and the lyrics of Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, The Lion King, Evita),  with the City of London Philharmonic and the  100-voice West End Chorus. I recently saw Adam Pasqual when he was in town with the touring company of RENT. I got goose bumps listening to him sing this wonderful music.

I just watched Inkheart last night, I really liked it. Would love to know what happened to some of the characters afterwards (maybe I’ll have to check out the books ;) .
It reminded me of Jasper Fforde’s series following Thursday Next.

I saw parts of Confessions of a Shopoholic (another book to movie) and it was sweet but at times embarrassing so I would cringe or run away until my family stopped laughing.

Like Gwen I’m a young chick at heart so thanks for movie ideas.

Love the heading! Hey, I’m a “Young Chick”…at heart. “Inkheart” and “Phoebe In Wonderland” both sound good, but think I’ll wait for the DVD’s. That is unless Ms Chick Flick herself would care to go see one at the movies with me. :)
