I really look forward to the Academy Awards show. The stars….the movie…the production numbers (not so much). Really the best part of The Oscars is my friend Elle’s (not her real name, but she know who she is) marvelous Oscar Party Blow Out. It’s basically its a Girl’s Night with movie stars. Like a Super Bowl Party, with wine and brie instead of chicken wings and beer.
This year’s Oscar show was 110% better than many of the shows in the past several years. Why?
Hugh Jackman!!!!!!
Hugh was a great host. If you have seen him take over the hosting job on the Tony Awards, you would know he could handle this show with ease. Not only is he GORGEOUS, but he can sing and dance too. The opening number, which is sometimes painful to watch was funny and cute with his “homemade sets” and cleaver lyrics. And his big dance number with Beyonce’ reminded me of those old Busby Berkley musicals. I may be a bit prejudiced, because I am a big Hugh Jackman fan, but I think they should sign him up for next year.
Actually, the whole show was reminiscent of Old Hollywood glamour. There were no political jokes or statements, just gracious tributes to the nominated actor. I especially loved the way they present the acting awards. With five previous winners paying tribute to the nominees. Even if you lost, how could you feel bad with Eva Marie Saint, Robert DiNiro and Christopher Walken giving you such praise in front of your peers.
Other great moments in the show for me included Penelope Cruz’s tearful acceptance speech in English and Spanish. My Spanish is rusty, but I think she said something about this being not only her award, but it was for all her Spanish people. (Please let me know if you have a more accurate translation.)
I expected him to win, but when they announced that the late Heath Ledger won for his frightening portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight, I got a bit misty eyed. Especially when his parents and sister came on stage and made their acceptance speeches. It would have been great if he was still with us and could make that speech himself.
It was also great to see the whole cast of (what looked like 1000’s ) Slumdog Millionaire come up on the stage to accept the award for Best Picture. The movie was the favorite to win and if you have seen it you know why. It is great to see an independent film without even one well know star win the big award.
What were your favorite moments from the Academy Awards? What do you think of Hugh Jackman as the host?
Hugh Jackman was, as always, absolute perfection. I thought this years show was thoroughly entertaining. My favorite parts were the cheesy props, the song “The Reader…I need to see The Reader”, Slumdog’s songs and the beautiful group presentations. I hope they continue that element every year.
