The Two Faces of Meryl

in Actresses

Meryl Streep is undoubtedly one of the greatest actresses of our day.  I say that being a huge Kathryn Hepburn fan.   Meryl has been nominated for numerous Oscars , Golden Globe and SAG Awards. This week she won the SAG Award for Best Actress for her amazing work in Doubt.  But that’s not the most amazing thing about Meryl Streep.

Like Kathryn the Great, Meryl has the ability to do both comedy and drama. I absolutely loved her in  The Devil Wears Prada .  This year  she  added musical comedy to her resume starring as the free-spirited Donna in the movie version of the Broadway hit Mama Mia. She sang, she danced and she was amazing! How can that happy go lucky woman  be the same sharp faced, hateful, judgmental nun in Doubt?

That is a testimony to her true talent.  She becomes the part. As I was watched Meryl’s  Sister Aloysius  Beauvier go toe-to-toe with Phillip Seymour Hoffman I was thankful my parents spared me the benefits of  a private Catholic school’s  “better education“. That woman was scary!  Not at all the same singing and dancing Meryl who wins the heart of Pierce Brosnan.

When you watch her in Doubt, you will understand why she has been nominated for so many awards. Treat yourself to a Meryl-Fest. If you haven’t seen Doubt, go see it today, then  rent Mamma Mia! & The Devil Wears Prada to see the many faces of Meryl Streep.

Stay tuned for more about the Best Supporting Actresses, Amy Adams and Viola Davis in Doubt. As well more about the Oscars.

While I enjoyed her performance in Doubt, her best of 2008 was in Mamma Mia where she proved she’s one of a select small number, like Jodie Foster, where you go to see the movie, whatever the reviews, because of what you expect from your leading lady.

I love Meryll! I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing Doubt but am very excited. My favourite Meryll’s include, Out of Africa and Sophie’s Choice. She blows my mind. I completely agree that she can master any genre and any character, but I was slightly disappointed by Mamma Mia. I preferred her in other comedies like The Devil Wears Prada and A Prairie Home Companion. And I can’t forget performaces like Aunt Josephine in Lemony Snickett’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and all her characters in the Angels in America mini-series. I can’t wait to read about Amy Adams.

Love! Love! Love The Bridges of Madison County! When she’s in the car and she’s reaching for the door handle I was screaming at her to go! The great thing about Meryl is that has the wonderful ability to make us feel like she’s just like the rest of us. But extraordinary!

@Darling Nikki: I know that scene. When he just sat there and the light turns green, but he doesn’t drive away. I just wanted her to jump out of the car and run away with him.
