in The Award Shows

It is award season for the movie business. Last week’s Golden Globe Awards were just the first in a long and seemingly endless line of award shows that lead up to the big enchilada, The Academy Awards.

But the real question is, why do we even care about the Golden Globes, The Directors Guild, The People’s Choice, The SAG Awards and all the others?  Is it the Red Carpet, where we watch the stars parade down the gauntlet  in their designer duds and spray-tanned finest talking to those inane reporters who can only come up with one question to ask a brilliant actress like Meryl Streep…”Who are you wearing“.  If I never heard that question again, I would be content to watch 10 hours straight of acceptance speeches.

For me the best reason to watch any of these awards shows  is to find out what Hollywood thinks is there best effort.  Moviegoers tell Hollywood what they like by means of box office dollars.  But the movies that are nominated are not necessarily the big box office winners.

Most of the time they are the opposite. Haven’t you sat there on Oscar night watching them announce for the nominees for  Best Picture and thinking to yourself–”I have never heard of any of these movies“.  And even if you are a movie lover and have seen all the nominated movies,  how often do they pick your favorite?

For me,  Award Season is a great time to find new films that I  might not have ordinarily have seen. would I have watched Crash if it had not won Best Picture in 2005?  Not being a fan of Russell Crow, I  definitely would not have seen Gladiator or A Beautiful Mind if they had not won Oscars.

The nominations for the 81st Annual Academy Awards with be announced on Thursday, January 22nd. I will be excited to see which actors and actresses they consider worthy of recognition and which five films they feel represent their best work of the year.

The Academy Awards are my favorite award show and all my friends know, not to call, text or otherwise disturb me during those three sacred hours. This year will be a double blessing, because Hugh Jackman will be the host of  the Oscars !!!!. And you know how I feel about Hugh!

Stay tuned for more award show news and more movie talk. Who do you think should be nominated for an Oscar? What are your picks for Best Picture?
